4 Nigerian schools to compete in Science Olympiad

Abuja - Nigeria Four schools will represent the country at the international fair of science seem planned for Brazil and Slovakia in October.

The show will allow schools to present their scientific inventions and projects.

The four schools include the School of Government Day Secondary (GDSS), Wuse II, Abuja, and the School for the Gifted, Gwagwalada, Abuja.

Others are the Solid Rock International School, Lafia and Government Science Technical College, Garki, Abuja.

They emerged winners after the contest to other selected schools across the nation and they represent the country in Brazil and Slovakia in October at the fair tagged "Mostratec".

GDSS emerged the winner with his invention of the insect repellent sprays against fleas living for animals and tea, all made from orange peels and dyes made from the hibiscus flower.

Solid Rock International School Lafia also won with his remote controlled car jack and GSM-home automation system to turn off appliances, even when they are away from home.

The remote controlled car jack designed to run on batteries will be powered by any direct infrared remote control.

The Science of Government Technical College won with its bio-fuel for generators feeding, from the water vapor from fermented corn, after being heated to 75 degrees Celsius.

School for the Gifted Gwagwalada also won, with its continued healthy Earth system made from components of a car battery, which produces hydrogen in the fight against the depletion of the ozone layer.

The contest was organized by the Society for the Promotion of Science and Technology in collaboration with the FCT for Science and Technology.

The goal of the contest is to build the capacity of Nigerian students in science and technology.

The coordinator of the competition in Nigeria, Mr. Desmond Achoakawa, said the fair was a competition for secondary schools to select schools that represent Nigeria in the international exhibition of Sciences.
