'Majority of hospitals' offer specialist surgical treatments
New evidence has shown that specialist surgical treatment options for heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) are now widely available.
Figures from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists showed that abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy for the treatment of HMB is now available in 97.3% of hospitals in England and 95.9% of hospitals in Wales.
HMB is where a woman is excessive blood loss during the period to the extent that it interferes with their quality of life.
Orientation of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends that, in 2007, where there are no obvious problems with the uterus, the medication must be provided. If these treatments and minor surgery to stop bleeding are not working, hysterectomy should be considered as a last option.
The first annual report on the National Audit menstrual bleeding showed that almost all hospitals are able to provide a vaginal and abdominal hysterectomy for women with HMB.
The report said a € œMost hospitals offered one or more ablation techniques second generation, in line with the point of good practice in Nice guidance.â €
Most also have facilities to study the problem with 80% with ultrasound and 97.7% with endometrial biopsy.
In primary care trusts in the number of procedures performed for ranges from 14 to 392 of HMB per 100,000 women.
Dr Tahir Mahmood, President of the National Audit HMB, said the first year of the national audit was very revealing and they now want all women with HMB to participate in the audit as it develops over the next three years.
