Lana tells: My part in Streets Alive celebration
AS a firefighter for the Rural Fire Service, LANA HILTON is prepared for just about anything. The demands of her incredibly dangerous job mean she’s on the front line battling the worst nature can throw at her. But after riding above a 13-tonne fire truck as the city united in a flurry of pride and celebration, Lana says she was overcome by the warmth of the well-wishers she encountered.
RECENTLY I was one of those lucky people’ sitting high above a fire truck, waving to a cheering city below.
No, I wasn’t a festival princess, I was part of a parade celebrating all that is vibrant and wonderful about Blacktown.
For the past decade the Fiesta has been wrapped up with the Streets Alive Parade - which honours Blacktown’s coming of age as a city and the great cultural diversity of the people who call it home.
As we waited in the carpark with at least 50 other groups the atmosphere was electric. There were Guides, army cadets, Dutch folk and Chinese dancing groups, musical and theatrical groups and school children.
As we neared parade time the atmosphere heightened.
Given this was the first time both myself and my colleague had taken part in the parade, we were a little unsure of how we should greet the crowd.
But we were already blown away by the feeling of togetherness - even by passing strangers who paused to congratulate us on our work.
It took us 15 minutes to complete the parade route. As we passed through the crowds people were looking up and cheering from every direction and I couldn’t hide the ridiculously huge grin plastered across my face.
With every child who beamed back at me, squinting into the sun, with their tiny painted faces and their little hands frantically trying to capture our attention, I waved back like a mad woman.
There were intermittent sounds of sirens tooting from each of the 14 fire appliances that attended, and the turnout was amazing.
