Big brother gives ailing tot new lease on life
The brothers' friendship goes beyond race cars and building blocks, as they have been through so much together these past months.
After being diagnosed with leukemia in January, Ben needed a bone marrow transplant. Jack was the marrow of a match, so the older brother willingly donated. The transplant was likely to Ben for the survival of from 85 to 90 percent.
"Jack loves superheroes. We said before the transplant that it is a real hero will save the life of his brother," said the father of boys, Robbie Cousins.
For the family of Ben, he is the hero - holding his own and keep his spirits up even as the fight against disease and all its complications. In addition to her parents and Jack, Ben received constantly nourished and affection of his half-sister, Katie, Caroline and Nicole.
The girls, who live in Mandeville, visit Ben and spend the night as often as possible, especially during the summer. Katie said they are always thinking of ways they can entertain the boys, even having pillow fights with Jack to get laughs Ben.
"Personally, I try to help as much as I can by giving blood and entertaining Ben as much as I can when I'm with him. My sisters help keep the house tidy and clean the rooms of the boys, "said Katie, 18, who graduated from Fountain
Bleau high in May and will begin her studies in English education in the South this fall. Twins Caroline and Nicole will be juniors at Fontainebleau.
While Ben was now stable and at home in uptown New Orleans for several weeks, the time immediately following transplantation was tumultuous.
The plight of the family began during the Christmas season last year, when Ben's parents noticed a little low energy and loss of appetite.
"Before November, it was a completely normal little boy, actually a kind of troublemaker. But his appetite and energy has fallen, "Cousins said Robbie.
